AlcoholEdu for Parents

UConn Storrs Campus Parents

Sending your student off to college for the first time is never an easy thing to do. In the next four years, your student will grow and change in a large part based on personal interactions and the environment in which he or she is living. We recognize that the culture at the University of Connecticut will have a big impact on your student’s growth.

We take every part of the University of Connecticut experience very seriously, and we have implemented a comprehensive prevention program to help our students make the safest, healthiest decisions possible.

As part of our comprehensive alcohol prevention program, for the eight year running the University of Connecticut is requiring that each member of the first-year class complete AlcoholEdu – an online, non-opinionated alcohol prevention program. This program is used on over 500 campuses nationwide. The course uses science-based research to educate students about alcohol and its effects. AlcoholEdu will empower your student to make well-informed safe decisions about alcohol for a successful college career.

Every University of Connecticut incoming first-year student will be required to take AlcoholEdu for College and pass the course’s Final Exam with a score of 85 or better before arriving on campus.

While we are committed to making a difference with our students, we also understand that parents are the first line of defense against alcohol misuse and abuse among students. We encourage you to take the AlcoholEdu course and use it as a way to open a dialogue about alcohol with your son or daughter prior to his/her arrival on campus. Research shows us that a student who is aware of the risks of substance use and has an open line of communication with his/her parent will have a much lower likelihood of any difficulty due to substance use/abuse. Alcoholedu will provide you with many facts to explore with your student prior to coming to campus.

Although the course is required for students, it is not required for their parents, but is a useful tool as you prepare your student for entering college.

We are confident that AlcoholEdu for College will help ensure your student’s success at The University of Connecticut and in the future. We look forward to seeing you at convocation on August 28 at 5:00pm (http://www.huskywow.uconn.edu/events.html#fri) to start off your student’s college career.
